My husband and I were on a plane with an African American colleague last month. The flight attendant told us to sit anywhere, so we chose seats near the front of the plane and across the aisle from one another. At the last minute, three Americans white men entered the plane and took seats in front of us. Just before takeoff, the flight attendant, who is White, asked if we would mind moving to the back of the aircraft to better balance the plane's weight. We grudgingly complied but we felt discriminated when she said "move to the back of the plane." When we expressed our feelings to the attendant, she denied and became defensive, stated that her intent was to ensure the flight's safety, and wanted to give us some privacy. Since we had entered the plane first, I asked why she did not ask the white Americans men to move instead of us. For this blog post, I interviewed three people from different cultures the 1st person is Hispanic, 2nd person is Indian and 3rd is African American. 1st person defined future as " culture consists of the traditions and customs of people." The 2nd person defined culture " Culture is the systems of knowledge shared by a relatively large group of people." The 3rd person defined culture as"culture refers to the cumulative of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies,and religion." African American culture is the one I picked because its very different than mine. I interviewed my neighbor and she was kind enough to tell me about her culture and traditions. The three items I would bring with me if I had to leave my country behind are first a photo album that I have included all the pictures of my childhood, my family, friends, wedding and honeymoon pictures. The photo album is so important because it not only tells my individual story but also tells the timeline of my life with my family. The second item I would bring is my wedding ring that my husband gave me. It is not just a piece of jewelry to me but is a symbol of the commitment that we have made to one another. The last item I would take is a bible. Christianity plays a big role in my culture growing up and now. My parents taught me to pray and put Jesus in every step I take in my life.
