Public Health

I choose breast-feeding a public health topic because I am a strong supporter to breast feed infants till age 1. I currently breastfeed my 11 months old and he is healthy and happy baby comparing to other kids at his age that are not breastfed. Beside the breast milk is rich with important nutrients, it also security and calming station for the infants.
Breastfeeding is the way of providing ideal food for the healthy growth and development
Of infants.
Breast-feeding is not an easy task for the mothers; it requires patients and dedication to be able to continue breast-feeding for at least one year. During my pregnancy, I took classes to learn how to breastfeed and it was offered through my health insurance. USA doctors recommend the moms breast feed and the lactation consultants help moms with breastfeeding process. My lactation consultants at the hospital after my delivery worked with me to teach my how to breastfeed and gave me helpful tips and feedback and im very thankful to her.
Many studies have shown the benefits of breastfeeding to the child and mother as well.  In the video by CBC news, the guest speaker Dr. Holly Phillips says a new study in Brazil shows that children who are breastfeed for a year or more have higher IQ level and income in adulthood. Most importantly She mentions children who are breastfed tend to enjoy a number of other health benefits. They are less likely to suffer from a variety of gastrointestinal and respiratory infections, asthma, diabetes and other conditions.
I learned from this topic, the first years of life are the most crucial years for brain, immune system and overall physiological development. This is why, it is extremely important to achieve optimal nutrition standards in these early years

  1. Thank you for your post this week. Consider yourself blessed to be able to provide this nourishment for your child. I was not able to breastfeed my daughter which was quite frustrating for me. I do think that we need to be accepting of those mothers that either through choice or cannot breastfeed though. While my daughter could not breastfeed she was happy and healthy child.

  2. Wonderful and informative post. I also breastfed my babies, 30 months each. Yes it was pretty difficult but I pushed pass the difficulties. My children have not had any major problems other than teething with a runny nose. I believe breast is best.

  3. I think that it is great that you are able to breastfeed your child. My first daughter I breastfed for about 4 weeks then my milk just stopped. I remember the day I gave her formula, I was sitting trying to breastfeed but I was not producing enough milk. My daughter was crying and I was crying with her. I called my mom crying because I felt bad for giving her formula but I had no other choice. I learned that in order to breast feed I really had to first take care of myself, which I wasn't doing, i was going days and not eating, and have a lot of time and patience. Even though I could not breastfeed my daughter turned out to be very healthy.
