The three items I would bring with me if I had to leave my country behind are first a photo album that  I have included all the pictures of my childhood, my family, friends,  wedding and honeymoon pictures. The photo album is so important because it not only tells my individual story but also tells the timeline of my life with my family. The second item I would bring is my wedding ring that my husband gave me. It is not just a piece of jewelry to me but is a symbol of the commitment that we have made to one another. The last item I would take is a bible. Christianity plays a big role in my culture growing up and now. My parents taught me to pray and put Jesus in every step I take in  my life. Therefore, having the bible will reminds me of my culture and how to be true christian.

If I was told, upon arrival that I was only able to keep one of the items that I brought with me, I would feel lost and cant choose which one to choose because the 3 items represents me and my culture. These three things are all very important aspects of my life and who I am and if I was forced to choose one I would feel as though I was being forced to let go of a part of my identity. This was a very difficult and emotional experience but was definitely worthwhile in learning exploring the importance of family culture.

  1. Hi Naire. I also agree that this was a very emotional experience. My family was not very close when I was growing up. We were taught to keep most things to ourselves. I believe that the first thing we all think of is family photo albums. They are usually pictures of joyous times and happy memories. There are not many reasons for us to take pictures of sad times. Except maybe for a car accident claim! I remember a few years back, my best friends father died. While at his funeral, I noticed that they had a professional photographer there that was taking a picture of the corpse throughout the service. I found that extremely odd, but then I asked my friend about it. He explained that that was something that they did in their family culture. I didn't understand so I made sure to ask. Our culture makes us and we need to carry it with us wherever we go!

  2. Hi Naire,

Parting with meaningful items can be extremely difficult. In the scenario I do not know how to would be able to cope if I was forced to give up things so dear to me as well as being placed in a country so different from my own. I appreicate you for sharing a little more insight about yourself and your culture within your post. It was a pleasure reading it.

  3. Thank you Naire for sharing. Two of the items you choose are similar to what i would choose as well- Pictures and the Bible and having to give up one could be a very emotional situation. Well thank God its only a hypothetical scenario.
