Early Child Studies

Young children are naturally curious about differences and one of the ways they make sense of their world is to sort things into different categories and focus on one thing at a time. Therefore my hope to families that they talk with their children about differences allows them to feel good about whom they are and appreciate diversity in themselves and others. My goal is to support children and families from diverse backgrounds by promoting understanding of and mutual respect for diversity. Children benefit when ECE do this because it creates an inclusive environment where everyone can participate and feel connected. A strong sense of belonging helps children understand and appreciate differences in themselves and others, which ultimately benefits their mental health and wellbeing.I would like everyone in this course for your support and participation. You comments and discussion posts were motivational and kept me going strong all the way to the end. 

The child and his family that will join my class soon are emigrated from Thailand and here are some preparation before the child joins my class.  I need to make sure that I will give this family a great first impression from the first time they enter my classroom. A friendly greeting with smile is a must and I need to make sure to pronounce their names correctly because Thai names are not familiar with me and its hard to remember. Calling people with their correct pronouncing names is important because it bring closeness and its self identity and I need to make sure they feel comfortable and most important the child feels comfortable with me in my class. I need to do research and gather information about the child and the family. For example, how many children are in the family? Do they understand any English?  Do they speak other languages? Do they have relatives here who speak English  to help them with translation? How long have they been in the Unite...

I am an immigrant in Los Angeles and living in a diverse city, I experience racial micro aggression. For example. I remember years ago we had a white neighbor that we got into argument with because of parking and he said to us “ you guys don’t know how to park your cars and you should go back to your country where you came from.” His message was offensive and insulting and we felt humiliated. We also felt discriminate and weak because we couldn’t speak back to him since our English wasn’t fluent and we were very new to this country. My husband and I were on a plane with an African American colleague last month. The flight attendant told us to sit anywhere, so we chose seats near the front of the plane and across the aisle from one another. At the last minute, three Americans white men entered the plane and took seats in front of us. Just before takeoff, the flight attendant, who is White, asked if we would mind moving to the back of the aircraft to better balance the plane's weight. We grudgingly complied but we felt discriminated when she said   "move to the back of the plane." When we expressed our feelings to the attendant, she denied and became defensive, stated that her intent was to ensure the flight's safety, and wanted to give us some privacy. Since we had entered the plane first, I asked why she did not ask the white Americans men to move instead of us. For this blog post, I interviewed three people from different cultures the  1st person is Hispanic, 2nd person is Indian and 3rd is African American. 1st person defined future as "  culture consists of the traditions and customs of people." The 2nd person defined culture " Culture is the systems of knowledge shared by a relatively large group of people." The 3rd person defined culture as"culture refers to the cumulative of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies,and  religion." African American culture is the one I picked because its very different than mine. The three items I would bring with me if I had to leave my country behind are first a photo album that  I have included all the pictures of my childhood, my family, friends,  wedding and honeymoon pictures. The photo album is so important because it not only tells my individual story but also tells the timeline of my life with my family. The second item I would bring is my wedding ring that my husband gave me. It is not just a piece of jewelry to me but is a symbol of the commitment that we have made to one another. The last item I would take is a bible. Christianity plays a big role in my culture growing up and now. My parents taught me to pray and put Jesus in every step I take in  my life.
